Always looking for the better solution?
Under this motto “The better solution”, the 16th AIMP Annual Forum took place at Schwarzenstein Castle in a wonderful ambience and finally live again with over a hundred guests, the “Who is who” of interim management.

Prof. Markus Hengstschläger offered the opening keynote on the theme with a brilliant lecture on the talent for finding solutions – how can we promote the talent for finding solutions and why is the talent for finding solutions declining in our economy. With easily understandable and convincing examples, he conveyed the insights of a geneticist.

The impulse was followed by a series of further lectures and workshops that discussed the topic from all sides.
s the broadly supported decision in a committee better than the one made on one’s own?
Dr. Harald Wachenfeld (IMS Interim Management Solutions) and Andreas Lau (HANSE Interim) moderated the workshop “Is the broadly supported decision in the board better than the one made alone?” – a high-caliber group of experienced interim managers discussed the key topic with us for over 90 minutes.

In an exciting workshop format, we defended four sub-theses to the discussants and collected supporting as well as refuting arguments from the discussants.

We learned from an interim manager from the medical field that the law provides for a committee of highly qualified physicians, lawyers and other experts to make a broadly supported recommendation on the further fate of a patient in critical condition in the intensive care unit. However, the individual decision must then be made by the patient or his or her authorized representative.
An overwhelming importance for broadly supported panel decision-making has been imposed by the nuclear powers. It is always a body of two or more decision-makers who have to push the red button – for good reason and quite topically.
But for most decisions in business, the discussants tended to suggest that committees or, better, teams should be deliberately appointed according to the nature of the decision to be made. The responsible manager should decide whether to use a team of high-quality experts to prepare his decisions, to expand them with further arguments not considered, or even to secure them. Important reasons for a broadly supported decision with a team can be the scope of the decision to be made, such as in the case of large investments, or if a high level of commitment is to be achieved in good time before the upcoming decision by the affected areas. For simple routine decisions with low complexity, on the other hand, the individual decision should be leading in order to be able to use the advantage of speed.
The consultative single decision – Our favorite!
In summary, we have coined the term Consultative Single Decision.

On our next vacation, we will first read the book “The Solution Talent”.
