A new project, a tight time frame and high expectations – interim managers are often faced with challenges that require quick decisions and precise implementation. But which behaviors make the difference between success and failure? Our survey provides the answers.
With 74 participants – including 72 experienced interim managers, a client and a financier – we asked those who know best. The results show not only what makes projects successful, but also which behaviors put them at risk. Particularly in the current economic climate, which is characterized by uncertainty, interim management offers companies the flexibility they need to exploit opportunities and manage risks.
The most important dos and don’ts in interim management
The survey results clearly show which behaviors in interim management ensure the success of the mandate – and which can jeopardize it.

The most frequently mentioned Dos include transparency, open communication and active listening. Interim managers who adapt flexibly to the client’s needs and set clear, achievable goals create trust and lay the foundation for sustainable success.
Don’ts, on the other hand, mainly include political behavior, unrealistic expectations and assigning blame. These mistakes often lead to tensions and conflicts. Those who behave neutrally and professionally, maintain clear boundaries and take responsibility will be perceived as a competent partner in the long term.
Top Dos
- Transparency and open communication: Clear, honest communication creates trust and prevents misunderstandings.
- Active listening: Interim managers who respond to the client’s needs promote positive collaboration.
- Flexibility and adaptability: Reacting dynamically to challenges and adapting to changing conditions.
- Clear definition of goals: Set realistic, achievable goals and work continuously towards their realization.
Listen, listen, listen – and only then act.
Top Don’ts
- Political behavior: Getting involved in internal power struggles or politics damages neutrality and trust.
- Raising unrealistic expectations: Unfulfillable promises quickly lead to disappointment and conflict.
- Assigning blame: Instead of “finger pointing”, the focus should be on responsibility for solutions.
- Ignore boundaries: Professional distance and clear demarcation of roles ensure success and appreciation.
Don’t: Actively contribute to ambiguity and confusion
